Cheers to Thomas Engel Hart who presented his Spring 2010 collection in Paris on Saturday. The presentation was cool and laid-back held in one of Paris's smallest galleries - approximately 6 square metres. An international crowd hung out on the street outside the gallery, drinking beer while 3 models loitered on the sidewalk smoking cigarettes and eating pizza.
Thomas collaborated with Eric Nehr to create a moody film helping to further describe Thomas' "intellectual punk" aesthetic and attitude. The film also helps to draw attention to the strong details of the collection: deconstructed knitwear, hand-painted jackets, and ripped denim. Watch the film at SHOWstudio.
Eric Nehr shared with us some of his photos from the night:
We're loving the coverage of Paris Men's Fashion Week on Tommy Ton's site Jak & Jil. He has great taste, picking out only the chicest of fashion show attendees and participants. He managed to shoot Glamour & Glitter friend Rad Hourani yesterday. Maybe one day Lily Bear will make the fashion cut.
Another silhouette showing off the amazing talents of Zandra Rhodes. We really do have a special place in our hearts for her white-on-white silkscreen prints. This organza dress is embellished with faux pearl beading along the hem of the ruffles. We also like the detail of the rope-like piping on the neckline. Found at Vintage Textile, on sale for $975.
This dress is a twist on her famous "73/44" dress. The 73/44 is her best-selling model revisited season after season. Made in printed chiffon, the model typically has a deep V-neckline, large sleeves, a full skirt, and a satin sash that covers an elastic waistband. This romantic silhouette has come to personify the 70s. This version is unique with its sleeves gathered at the elbow, and large ruffle across the neckline.
Super sad news that Michael Jackson passed away. Aside from his sometimes scandalous, sometimes tragic personal life, he was The King of Pop. We believed he really was about to make a proper comeback with the 50 concerts planned in London and his resurgence as a fashion icon. It's very sad and we feel for his children and the rest of his family.
Disney has released some of the concept art for Alice in Wonderland. The movie is coming out March 5, 2010. We love the roses.
We recently re-watched the Disney cartoon version of Alice. It's all about drugs, right?
Also released were images of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway in character. The white on ivory on cream on nude with accents of brown and deep red colour story is dreamy. We totally have a thing for almost white hair on pale skin.
This month, many exciting art & design exhibitions are going on around the world. Here is our selection of what we think will influence the fashion world the most:
The New Acropolis Museum, Athens
Scheduled to open this weekend, the New Acropolis Museum is one of the most anticipated cultural projects of the decade. It's modern design by architect Bernard Tschumi has been a bit controversial for the Greeks, juxtaposed with its neighbour, the Parthenon. The collection is heavily concentrated on Ancient Greek art including some of the original panels of the Parthenon frieze, depicting a procession in honour of Athena.
Expect designers to be inspired by the "wet drapery" look of the sculptures' garb, and perhaps the colour range and pattern possibilities of stone. Special dedication to Greek native Sophia Kokosalaki and designers like Chris Benz who will be vacationing in Mykonos this summer.
Mysterious graffiti artist, Banksy, returns home to Bristol to 'remix' the museum's permanent collection and exhibit over 100 of his own works. It is the largest Banksy show to date. With lots of humour, Banksy has modified permanent exhibits like adding certain props to make a lion look like he has eaten his tamer.
Expect designers to be influenced by his sense of humour and his mash-ups of classical art and graffiti. Spray paint, stencils and dripping paint will make for exciting prints. Guaranteed to please John-Charles de Castelbajac, Vivienne Westwood, and denim lines like Diesel and Miss Sixty.
Ennis House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1924 , is going on sale for $15 million. The Los Angeles house has been in the hands of a non-profit group since 1980 but they have now decided the house would be better off privately owned (and restored). The house famously served as backdrop to many films, particularly Blade Runner. It was also featured on Twin Peaks.
The design of the house is Mayan-inspired and is one of only four of Wright's "textile block" homes. We thought since designer's are endlessly inspired by Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, maybe Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House would inspire them too.
Two major glitter moments in music happened last night.
Beyonce started off her world tour in New York in an awesome glitter bodysuit. The colour is super gorgeous... and the exaggerated hip contouring is, dare we say fierce (haha get it?).
... and Lady Gaga performed at the Much Music Video Awards in Toronto with crazy firework boobies and a studded bodysuit.
